Join us for a FREE film screening in the Justice Forum at the REACH.

As the United States raced against Russia to put a man in space, NASA found untapped talent in a group of African American female mathematicians that served as the brains behind one of the greatest operations in U.S. history. Based on the unbelievably true life stories of three of these women, known as “human computers,” Hidden Figures follows how they quickly rose the ranks of NASA, alongside many of history’s greatest minds, specifically tasked with calculating the momentous launch of astronaut John Glenn into orbit and guaranteeing his safe return. Dorothy Vaughn, Mary Jackson, and Katherine Johnson crossed all gender, race, and professional lines while their brilliance and desire to dream big—beyond anything ever accomplished before by the human race—firmly cemented them in U.S. history as true American heroes.

Please Note: Patrons who make advanced reservations can pick up their tickets at the REACH Box Office on the day of the film beginning 1 hour prior to performance time. Patrons need to either print the email confirmation at home and present it to the REACH Box Office, or show the email confirmation at the REACH Box Office on their “smart device.” Tickets that have not been claimed by 15 minutes prior to the start of the film will be released and distributed to a stand-by line.

This is a first come-first serve event; a reservation confirmation does  not  guarantee you a ticket to the film. Please arrive early to exchange your email confirmation at the REACH Box Office for a ticket to be seated in the Justice Forum.

Wave: From Space to Ocean

Wave: From Space to Ocean is a world premiere immersive artwork that invites viewers to interact with data from NASA’s new PACE—Plankton, Aerosol, Cloud, ocean Ecosystem—satellite through their own physical gestures. (USA)

WORLD PREMIERE

Wave: From Space to Ocean is an immersive artwork that invites viewers to interact with data from NASA’s new PACE—Plankton, Aerosol, Cloud, ocean Ecosystem—satellite through their own physical gestures. A series of 5 interactive projections present data-driven artworks to be explored and manipulated by visitors through where they step and the motions of their hands. The work engages ocean science through the space-borne observations and hyperspectral imaging of the NASA PACE mission, encouraging intuitive exploration of PACE data and imagery. By accessing these connected elements through playful, gestural interaction we hope to foster a larger dialogue about the interdependence of ocean ecosystems and the role humans play in upsetting, or maintaining, their balance.

Presented in collaboration with the Kennedy Center, NASA, University of Maryland, and University of North Texas

Supported by University of Maryland, UMD Arts for All, UMD Immersive Media Design Program, University of North Texas, UNT xREZ Art + Science Lab

Yewande is an American Nigerian visual artist, curator, and social practitioner using her creative practice as a means for community care. While her first career as a healthcare administrator lends to her expertise at the intersection of health and wellness and racial justice, her Nigerian heritage and Southern upbringing lend to her love of storytelling. As such, Yewande’s work celebrates, reframes, and even reimagines narratives that have been inadequately or falsely delivered in the past.
